I can't believe my eyes when I saw this piece of news.

Isis chairman Dr Noodin Sopiee has passed away

KUALA LUMPUR: Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) chairman Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sopiee died at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur at 3.50pm today.

He looked OK when I last saw him a couple of months back. True, he wasn't looking that fit, but...

Stroke? Heart-attack?

My condolences to the family of Tan Sri Noordin Sopiee.

May God bless his soul.

Notes for 2006

First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to.
~ Epictetus

2005 is coming to an end in 3 days. 2006 is coming on...What have you done with your life this far? Did you make a difference to someone in 2005? Have you given more than you've taken for the past year? If you have only 365 days left to your life, how will you spend it?

'It should be a journey worth the chase'.

When you believe...

Movie still from 'Prince of Egypt'.

Do you remember the animated movie, 'Prince of Egypt'? It was banned here some years ago and never made it to our theatres.

Did you get to see it?

I managed to watch the VCD version at home. Well, I also watched the Charlton Heston version of this story as a child. I remember it was a long and 'massive' 3 hours plus movie. I recalled walking out of the theatre expecting to see donkey carts, people in robes and miles and miles of rugged, desert landscapes. Yes, I know the story very well.

Why, I know it intimately.

It is the story of a man who grew up in the laps of luxury only to discover who he really is, a castaway.

Movie still from 'Prince of Egypt'.

It is a tale about a man who've tried to run away from his calling. One day, he hears the 'Voice of the Burning Tree' in the wilderness and obeys. He listens to the Voice and acts against the many voices that speak against that One Voice. It is a soul-inspiring epic about a self-doubting young man who've learned to embrace his Role in Life within a larger scheme of things.

Movie still from 'Prince of Egypt'.

It is a story about a man who rose to meet his Destiny.

Depending on how you see it, the Prince of Egypt can be simply a tale about pure faith and simple obedience. But for me, most of all, it is a story about the Power of Believing. The movie, 'Prince of Egypt' has a theme song called 'When you believe' that ignites that soul-fire within not unlike those old hymns you would sing with tears welling in your eyes.

It's one of those songs that speak to me and I want to share it with you. Here it is.

When You Believe...
Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, theme song for the movie Prince of Egypt

Many nights we prayed, with no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song, we barely understood
Now we are not afraid, although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains long before we knew we could

There can be miracles, when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles, you can achieve,
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

In this time of fear, when prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer birds, too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here, my heart so full I can't explain
Seeking faith and speaking words, I'd never thought I'd say

There can be miracles, when you believe (When you believe)
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles, you can achieve (You can achieve)
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

They don't always happen when you ask
And it's easy to give in to your fear
But when you're blinded by your pain
Can't see your way safe through the rain
A small but still resilient voice
Says help is very near

There can be miracles (miracles)
When you believe (When you believe)
Though hope is frail
It's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve (You can achieve)
When you believe
Somehow you will
You will when you believe
You will when you believe
You will when you believe
Just believe, just believe
You will when you believe

May your pathway of Believing,
parts the perilous seas that encircle your Life.
May your act of Believing,
draws living water from the desert of your Despair.
May your journey of Believing,
opens up the way and leads you to the Promised Land.

Movie still from 'Prince of Egypt'.

If we really know who we are and what we are capable of, would we talk less? Will we fret less? Are our torrent of words just vain attempts to frame our misgivings about who we are and what we are to do with this mystery called Life? Are our 'running arounds' a mere dance to the rhytmn of our existential fear?

Are our beliefs and principles a charade we act out just to have the last laugh?

The sound of silence...

It's Christmas Time!
by Chief Alchemist a.k.a Wiley Chin - December 9, 2005 Posted: 1:49:35 PM EDT

It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold; 'Peace on the earth, good will to men, From Heaven’s all gracious King.' The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. ~ A Christmas Carol.

It's been almost like a tradition at XiMnet to gather at my place for a Christmas dinner every year. It's that time of the year and that feeling is in the air.

Now, what turns me on this time of the year is the 'culinary explorations' I get to indulge in. I love cooking. I find cooking therapeutic, cathartic even. It's one art-form you get instantaneous response from your 'audience'. Mostly good. You see, nobody can sneer with a belly of good food, yes? I do look forward to the days I could cook more. :-)

This time round, I am thinking of doing Italian and Japanese (imagine great pastas and all kinds of sauces with sushi, tempura and sashimi). I guess I'll throw in BBQ for fun. Put all the gang together with great food, good wine and Michael Buble or Nat King Cole over the stereo and I think we will have a memorable party to end our wonderful year.

And I hope it rains. (Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain...)

OK guys, whoever got my name for gift-sharing, don't buy me a tie-pin again, please? I don't wear a tie to work, right?

P.S. Nong Yuen, you are invited if you bring 2 bottles of chardonnay. '-)

Proposed Menu for Christmas Bash

Grilled fruits/vege/seafood
Cream Mushroom & Clam Chowder (Home-made with fresh ingredients)

Main Course++++++++++++++++++
Spaghetti Aglio/Vongole
Grilled Salmon & Seafood BBQ

Chardonnays/Cabernet Sauvignon/Ice Wine (courtesy of Nong Yuen, ya?)
Perky cocktails

Mixed tropical fruits

Yep, no turkeys for me. Turkeys are overrated. I would be happy doing herb-flavored roast-duck but let's save that for Chinese New Year.

Living is easy with eyes closed,
misunderstanding all you see.
It’s getting hard to be someone but it all works out,
it doesn’t matter much to me.
Let me take you down, ’cause I’m going to strawberry fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry fields forever.
